Expecting Gifts from God

December 8, 2017

My daughter turned one at the beginning of November, and we had her birthday party a few days after. Celebrating her was so much fun, and I’m proud to say I didn’t shed a single tear!

Amidst the festivities, I found myself feeling extra blessed by the friends and family that wanted to give a gift to our one-year-old. My husband and I were pretty specific in our answer when people asked what they could get her – “books and money for educational experiences,” was our answer. When her party was over and we sat as a family pulling tissue paper out of bags, I found myself having a visual picture of God’s heart for us. God is our father, and He wants to spoil His kids. But just like a child, we can either receive the blessing our Father gives us, or we can cry about how it’s not what we wanted.

Sure, our daughter is only one, so she was more interested in the wrapping than the actual gift, but as she grows and begins to understand the human nature of wanting certain things, I wonder what her reaction will be when she opens all her gifts and the one thing she really wanted isn’t there.

I cannot tell you how many times I’ve done this as an adult. Yes, I have a roof over my head and clothes on my body, but I want THAT house or I want THOSE clothes. Expectations are such a thief of joy. God has given you exactly what you need – not necessarily what you think you want.

So let me encourage you with this – God loves you! You are His child. And just like a parent who loves to spoil their kiddo, God loves to spoil you too. But He also knows what you need.

Psalm 37:4 says, “Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” For the longest time I read this as God will give me the desires of my heart, but that’s not what the verse says. It says, Find your joy IN the Lord, and once you do that, He will give you the desires of your heart because if you find joy in God, then you want what He wants.  And He wants to bless you with what you NEED so that you can be a blessing to others.

Take some time today and thank God for all the things in your life. It’s amazing how humbling it can be when you realize how truly blessed and spoiled you already are.
